Publishers Studio Launches

With the expertise you can expect from a software provider with high-level knowledge of publication workflow, QuadSystems is offering its newest and most comprehensive solution, Publisher's Studio.

Publisher's Studio is the enhanced rendition of its well-known product components, Impoze and AdSync. For many years, Impoze has been the markets default application for magazine production planning. AdSync was developed with insider knowledge of how publishers manage the entire sales process all the way up to invoicing. Both products are currently synchronized in a publishers environment.

Publisher's Studio will present the same end-to-end functionality, plus more, in a single enterprise savvy application, further eliminating the redundancies present in many workflows. The result will be real-time access to all the data critical for publishers to make up-to-the-minute decisions about their business.

In addition, QuadSystems has designed the software to include an open architecture interface for ultimate flexibility in enabling two-way integration with other systems and solutions, up to and including editorial workflow applications, general ledger systems and CRMs. Special analytical services using data warehousing will also be available for competitive analysis and budget modeling.

As with all QuadSystems offerings, product conception has industry knowledge and feedback as its primary foundation. An industry advisory board will be established as Publisher's Studio begins a phased implementation. Keep an eye out.

Bridge to PlanSystem3

Coming this spring/summer, your Web browser can become a bridge to PlanSystem3 when Van Gennep MAC, creator of the PS3 workflow management software introduces PlanSystem WebSolutions. The new Web client will put the functionality of PlanControl (PlanSystems production tracking tool) into Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer. Users will be able to query for jobs, see information on the jobs (such as status or whos working on a file) as well as check out a job, work on it and then check it back in.

Nanette Schoute, Van Genneps director of product management and customer operations, said that the introduction of a Web-based tool will help the company have a quicker turnaround time addressing customers needs.

Depending on how companies choose to implement WebSolutions, it will eliminate the need for a VPN connection. Of course, users will still need Adobe InDesign to work on InDesign files, Microsoft Word to work on Word files, etc.

Van Gennep plans to roll out various aspects of WebSolutions throughout the second and third quarters. In addition to the initial PlanControl functionality, the Web client will eventually include the ability for multiple users to administer PlanSystem simultaneously (create users, define workflows, etc.), reporting functionality (both sample reports and the opportunity for custom reports), and an improved PlanView (a read-only version of each editions flat plan).

PlanSystem WebSolutions will require PlanSystem 3.6.6, also slated for release in the second quarter. PS3.6.6 will introduce a handful of enhancements to the existing PlanSystem clients, including improved versioning capability in PlanMaker.

Hosted Solutions Enhanced to Conserve Resources

The idle timer on the Hosted Solutions servers has recently changed from 4 hours to 2 hours.

What is the idle timer?

The Hosted Solutions servers continuously check for user activity through the keyboard, mouse clicks, and screen refreshes. When there is no activity for 2 hours, the session will be disconnected and 20 minutes later will be logged off. If activity is seen before the 2 hours, the timer will reset itself and start all over.

Why are we making this change?

Idle sessions take a considerable amount of resources which could be reserved for active sessions or additional users. It is our expectation that this change will limit the need to purchase more hardware (MuW servers) and software licenses.
